Arthritis Q & A Q & A

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that causes joint inflammation. It can develop in one or more of your joints. While there are dozens of  types of arthritis, the two main types are:

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common of all the types of arthritis. Often called wear-and-tear arthritis, OA occurs when the flexible cartilage that cushions your joints breaks down. It commonly develops in middle-aged and elderly adults and affects women more often than men. Most people experience OA pain in their back, neck, hips, hands, and knees.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that attacks the synovium — the lining in your joints — leading to joint inflammation and chronic pain. Because RA is an autoimmune disease, it can develop in nearly any area of your body, including the lungs, heart, and eyes, though it most commonly affects the ankles, knees, or hands.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?

Most arthritis symptoms occur in the joints. However, you may have arthritis if you experience:

  • Joint pain
  • Swollen joints
  • Tender joints
  • Stiff joints (especially in the morning)
  • Redness around the joints
  • Decreased range of motion

If you have rheumatoid arthritis, you may also have a slight fever, lose your appetite, or become anemic.

How is arthritis treated?

SC Stem Cell offers several nonsurgical therapies that both treat and repair the damage left behind by arthritis. Some of these innovative treatments include:

Stem cell therapy

During stem cell therapy, the SC Stem Cell team injects stem cells directly into your joints to promote healing of damaged connective tissue. This type of regenerative medicine helps relieve joint inflammation, pain, and stiffness. It also treats scar tissue and improves both mobility and joint function.

Hyperbaric chamber

During hyperbaric oxygen therapy, you breathe in pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. While your blood naturally carries oxygen throughout your body, damaged tissues require additional oxygen. When combined with stem cell therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy promotes faster healing. For maximum benefits, SC Stem Cell recommends three treatments per week for a total of 25 to 40 sessions.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy can help relieve pain and tension in your damaged tissues, joints, and muscles to improve flexibility and mobility. Depending on your unique case, SC Stem Cell offers Swedish, lymphatic, and deep tissue massages.
